标题: World Sanitation Day: Making the invisible resource visible
The sanitation crisis endangers the healthiness of water in rivers, lakes and soils, thus contaminating underground water resources and posing a threat to biodiversity. Groundwater is essential for human development and health, as it is the most abundant source of fresh water. However, it seems that this problem is invisible as it happens underground and in the poorest and most marginalized communities. On November 19, World Sanitation or Toilet Day was celebrated, designated in 2013 by the UN General Assembly , with the aim of raising awareness among the population about the global sanitation crisis and promoting measures that solve this major problem.

We currently have very worrying data about Ecuador Email List sanitation systems in the world, especially in developing countries. A study concludes that the following data are alarming: Currently, 4.5 billion people (60% of the human population) do not have systems in their homes that safely remove excrement and 892 million continue to defecate in the open. Around 1.8 billion people on the planet drink non-potable water that could be contaminated by feces. 900 million students worldwide lack handwashing facilities, critical in the spread of deadly diseases. 80% of wastewater generated by the world's population returns to the environment without being treated or reused.

The day aims to raise awareness about taking action to address the global sanitation crisis and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6: sanitation and water for all by 2030. This aims to end open defecation, and improve water quality by reducing pollution and effectively treating wastewater. Every year, World Toilet Day focuses on a theme and for 2022 it is: “Sanitation and groundwater: making the invisible resource visible”; 1. Safe sanitation protects groundwater : Toilets that are correctly located and connected to safely managed sanitation systems collect, treat and dispose of human waste and help prevent it from spreading through groundwater.
