The Riddle of the First Bible Translation Committee Eerik Sorolainen's post also includes a question that fascinates both linguists and theologians. In 1602, Charles IX appointed an eight-person committee whose task was to translate the entire Bible into the Finnish language, because after Mikael Agricola, most of the Old Testament was still untranslated. It is known that the committee included both priests and schoolmen, of course the bishop of Turku, Eerik Sorolainen, was at the forefront.

But did the committee also create some kind of translation or not? The entire Bible was published in Finnish only in 1642, years after Sorolainen's death and translated by another committee appointed in 1638.



When reading Sorolainen's postillan, you notice quite quickly that the bishop quotes the same Bible verses in different ways in different places. If the work of the first Bible translation committee got started and produced results, one would think that Sorolainen would have quoted the Bible more precisely and systematically. But it is certainly possible that the inaccuracies are due to borrowing from memory.
