Plans and sections of the building. Going up the central pathway that connects the upper and lower parts of the building, there are plenty of spaces for students in and around the staircase. Strategically placed light wells direct the light from the skylight towards the lower areas. Perkins Eastman always tries to discover the heart of the school in every school he designs. In this school, it takes the form of an ascending staircase that accompanies the atrium, with the school library extending horizontally and vertically through the space. The staircase provides access to the learning spaces, the courtyard, the cafeteria and more. All of this is distributed across the two academic wings that flank the heart of the school. A holistic approach to sustainable design Perkins Eastman believes that design should positively impact people's lives and environments. Her work takes into account environmental, technological, economic and social changes and strives to leave a lasting positive impact on people's lives and the world we inhabit.

This deep-rooted culture ensures that the concept of sustainable design is integral to each project. Diagram of the design steps taken to make the volumetric model of the building. While the team's goals encompassed the ten measures for design excellence: integration, just communities, ecosystems, water, economy, energy, well-being, resources, change and discovery, Perkins Eastman Bahrain Email List focused on the intersection between energy and well-being. The main objective was to provide comfort to occupants through extensive investigation of natural light, thermal comfort, acoustics and air quality. Performance statistics Performance Baseline: ASHRAE  Performance objectives: Achieve net-zero energy status by aiming for a pEUI of KBTU/f/year – a % improvement over baseline without photovoltaics (PV) and a % improvement with PV. Achieve well-lit spaces with % spatial daylight autonomy (sDA) for all regularly occupied spaces and only % annual solar exposure (ASE) Through D modeling in SketchUp and energy and daylight analysis in SketchUp's Sefaira plugin and Climate Studio.

Omar's team incorporated sustainability solutions throughout the building without compromising thoughtful design. This is shown at the entrance to the school, where a perforated panel does double duty. It serves to shade the east-facing, reflection-prone facade, and also as an art installation dedicated to Benjamin Banneker and some of his achievements. Image showing the entrance to the school. "Conserving energy and achieving net-zero energy have to start with understanding where the sun is in relation to the building. Proper orientation of a building should maximize daylighting opportunities without overheating the building." Omar Calderón Santiago, chief designer at Perkins Eastman Collage: Image of classrooms and public spaces with natural lighting. In the past, Perkins Eastman has entrusted performance analysis to outside consultants. They now have an internal team that has energy and daylight analysis tools, such as SketchUp's Sefaira. With Sefaira, they readjusted the position and size of the skylights to maintain good natural light and eliminate excessive heat. "We love that there are a lot of tools, like Sefaira, that are compatible with SketchUp. We can use SketchUp as a tool to iterate the design, do the daylight analysis in Sefaira and go back to SketchUp to fine-tune the design." Perkins.
