Potential of Geothermal Energy in Spain

Geothermal energy has its origin in the energy that emanates in the form of heat to the earth's surface and is created by the difference in temperatures between deep earth layers and the surface. Geothermal exchange systems are an alternative solution to direct human supply and consumption towards the energy transition. Although it is a solution aimed at the decarbonization of our country, it must be taken into account that, although the planet's heat is considered an infinite source of energy, its prolonged exploitation can deplete a geothermal field.

Last quarter, the annual Assembly of Oman Email List GEOPLAT, the Spanish Geothermal Platform, was held at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), within a framework highlighted by the difficulty that Europe is having with respect to its own energy transition. One of the strategic actions of the Ministry of Science and Innovation is to promote public-private collaboration in the field of research and innovation, an action considered in the State R&D+1 Plan 2021-2023 and in the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism of the EU.



The geothermal sector in our country has advanced mainly in the field of air conditioning, where there are aid programs with European funds NextGenerationEU. In addition, it has promoted its scope in the rehabilitation of housing and urban regeneration, and in the advancement and incorporation of renewable energies. “There is aid for all types of buildings in all types of sectors: residential or public buildings; for industry, for the agricultural sector, or services; for new or existing buildings,” explained the Technician of the Hydroelectric, Geothermal and Environmental Energy Department of the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).
