What are agroforestry systems?
agroforestry systemsAgroforestry systems are agricultural production systems that combine trees and shrubs with agricultural crops and/or animals on the same plot.

In this type of system, trees and shrubs are intentionally planted and managed to produce agricultural products, such as fruits, timber, firewood, fodder, among others, while agricultural crops and animals are grown in the same area and can be harvested. for human or animal consumption.

Agroforestry systems can be designed and managed in different ways, depending on production needs and objectives. These may include:

Traditional agroforestry systems such as:

The fruit gardens
Edible forests
Silvopastoral systems
More intensive and te  Special Data  chnical agroforestry systems such as:

Commercial agroforestry systems
Wood production systems
Production systems for non-timber products
What elements make up an agroforestry system?
The elements that make up an agroforestry system can vary depending on geographic location, climate, soil type, production objectives and other factors. However, in general, an agroforestry system may include the following elements:

agroforestry systemsTrees and bushes
They are the main components of the agroforestry system and can be of different species, sizes and shapes.

They can be fruit trees, timber trees, forage trees, shrubs, among others.

Agricultural crops
They are the crops that are grown in the same area where the trees and shrubs are found. They can be annual or perennial crops and can include vegetables, fruits, legumes, among others.

They can be raised in the same area where the trees and shrubs are found, using the forage produced by them.

They can be farm animals , such as chickens, pigs, and cows, or wild animals, such as birds and rodents.

Floor
It is the environment where trees, shrubs and agricultural crops grow.

The soil must be managed appropriately to ensure the health of the plants and the productivity of the agroforestry system.

Water
It is essential for the growth of trees, shrubs and agricultural crops. Agroforestry systems must be designed and managed in a way that guarantees access to and adequate management of water.

Infrastructure
It includes the structures that are used to support the agroforestry system, such as fences, irrigation systems, roads, among others.

In a well-designed agroforestry system, these elements must interact in a complementary and collaborative manner to produce a variety of agricultural and non-agricultural products in a sustainable manner.
